Member’s
death inspires the Old Dominion Boat Club to donate $30,000 to the
Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center
Alexandria, Virginia
– “From its earliest history to today ,the Old Dominion Boat Club has
been a continuous supporter of charitable institutions” commented Chris
Marino, Club President following a social event and silent auction held
at the Boat Club Saturday evening, February 5th in memory of a popular
member who recently succumbed to colon cancer. “Simply having someone
who had been an active member and as well known as Andy Horne, die at
the relatively young age of 61, brought to light the wonderful treatment
available at the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, and the need to
support their research.”
The Old Dominion
Boat Club raised over $30,000 through the fundraiser. ”When the
community comes together like this and raises money for Lombardi, their
efforts have a great impact on our cancer research, “say Kathy Wiedemer,
Executive Director of Development at the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer
Center. “What they were able to raise at a first annual fundraising
event, is quiet impressive. Their tireless efforts inspire all of us
who have a vision to see cancer eradicated.” Marino says, “As a club we
plan to continue our support with an annual fundraiser similar to this
recent success”.
The Old Dominion Boat Club, Club members, along with community
businesses donated over 35 items to be auctioned, that included a
football signed by former Redskin Hall of Fame quarterback, Sonny
Jurgensen,, and an autographed jersey signed by Washington Wizard, Juan
Dixon. Other items ranged from artwork and jewelry to dinners at some
of Alexandria’s most popular restaurants. “It’ is fitting, as we
celebrate our 125th year, the tradition of supporting humanitarian
needs, and activities for those less fortunate in this wonderful
city, that once again our members responded so generously with both
their time and money”, concluded Mark Poskaitis, coordinator of the
event.
