Member’s Death
inspires the Old Dominion Boat Club
to host a New
Year’s Day Polar Burr Plunge
Alexandria, VA
(January 2, 2006) Thirty-four fearless “Polar Burr Plungers” jumped into
the icy waters of the Potomoc River and raised over $5,500 for the
American Liver Foundation’s research and education on liver-related
diseases. “I can’t think of a better way to kick off the New Year than
to sponsor a fundraiser in memory of one of our beloved members, Dave
Penland, who recently succumbed to liver disease at the age of 59,” says
Eric DeSoto, Old Dominion Boat Club President. “ODBC is a continuous
supporter of chartable institutions and we are pleased to help raise
funds to support the American Liver Foundation’s efforts to promote
liver wellness,” says DeSoto. The National Capital Area Polar Burr
Plunge took place off the docks of the Old Dominion Boat Club on New
Year’s Day with support from an Alexandria Paramedic Team and the
Alexandria Fire Department.
“The Old Dominion
Boat Club’s partnership in hosting the Polar Burr Plunge into the
Potomac along with the sponsorship of several organizations such as the
Old Town Fire Station, America Online, Design Cuisine, Sport & Health
Clubs, Catalyst Events, and Arena Sports had a tremendous impact on
making this first annual New Year’s Day Plunge a successful and fun
event,” says Laura Jackson, Executive Director for the American Liver
Foundation. “Nationally one in ten people are afflicted with liver
disease. ODBC’s generosity in providing the facility and pier for this
event will go towards raising awareness of the impact of liver disease
in this area” says Jackson.
Five ODBC members
participated in the actual ‘Plunge.’ They were Chuck Collins, Miles
Holtzman, Joe Landa, Marianne McInerney, Doug Wood.
