ODBC Crews Shine in Fall Rowing Season
ALEXANDRIA, VA – Alexandria’s Old
Dominion Boat Club was the first home of high school rowing in
Virginia, 60 years ago. Today the club is carrying on that
tradition, sponsoring a medal-winning team of youth rowers in fall
regattas.
ODBC boys crews have placed first
in both local events they’ve entered this fall, and on October 22
made the top ten in the nation’s most famous rowing event, Boston’s
Head of the Charles Regatta.
The boys “A” eight - cox Ian
Waterhouse Terrell, Patrick O'Malley, Stephen Silverstein, Ellis
Carpenter, David Kahan, Paul Blakeslee, Kieran Merek, Dominic
Condello, Mac Johnson - took 10th place (out of 56) at the Head of
the Charles with a time of 15:52.948. Coach Peter Hearding called
it "a great race."
"They had a row they were all happy
with," Hearding said. In fact, the commentator on the internet
webcast pointed out the ODBC crew looking strong in the middle
portion of the race and noted the "great line that Ian took all the
way down the course," passing several boats along the way.
"Ian absolutely killed the turn
coming under the Eliot Bridge, which is a full 180 degrees by the
time you get all the way around and leads into the last 700-800
meters of the race," he said.
"I'm as proud as can be - it is a
really special bunch of kids. This group won the Head of the
Potomac, won the Occoquan Chase and now placed 10th at the largest
regatta in the world. I can't wait to see what they're capable of
in Philly and the Head of the Occoquan."
This year’s ODBC team has three
boys boats – two eights and a four – and two girls eights. The boys
four also came in first at the Head of the Potomac in Georgetown on
September 30, and captured second at the Occoquan Chase on October
14.
The girls team, coached by TC
Williams alumnus and former Olympic coach Mike Porterfield, placed
third and fifth at the Head of the Potomac, their only outing so far
this season.
On Saturday, October 27, all the
ODBC crews will travel to Philadelphia for the Head of the
Schuylkill Regatta, and they’ll end their season at the Head of the
Occoquan on November 4. Head races are regattas in which crews race
against the clock over a set distance, rather than side-by-side.
The standard head race distance is 3 miles.
The Old Dominion Boat Club crew,
now in its eighth season, is a competitive rowing program for
Northern Virginia high school rowers. It is administered by
Alexandria Crew Boosters, and uses the Dee Campbell Rowing Center in
Old Town Alexandria. For more information, go to
