                            MEMBERSHIP IN THE OLD DOMINION BOAT CLUB

Who we are
Not all members of the ODBC are boaters.  Although we have an operating marina with limited slips for our boat-owners, the location of the Club and the events put on by its members assure enjoyment by all.  The membership is diverse and blends well.  Our members are involved as volunteers in the day-to-day operations of the Club.  They take care of the grounds, building and marina; plan events; and just get together socially.  The Club, through its members, is also active in charity fundraisers and the sponsorship of rowing programs and scholarships for Alexandria high school students.

Membership Categories
There are five categories of membership.
  • Active;
  • Non-Resident:  Must maintain a residence 100 road miles from the Club and have been a member for 5 years;
  • Retired:  Must be retired, have been a member for 20 consecutive years and (a) be 62 years of age or older, or (b) be disabled or (c) reside outside of a radius of 75 miles from the Club;
  • Senior:  Must be 70 years of age and have been a member for 25 consecutive years;
  • Golden:  Must have been a member for 50 consecutive years;
  • Life:  May be conferred on any member by nomination and at least a 90% vote of the members present at a meeting.
There is currently a cap on Active membership of 700 members.  All other categories fall outside of the membership cap.  There is a waiting list of approximately 150 applicants.  When the Active cap is filled in June of 2006, the list will move at about 5 applicants per month due to attrition or change of membership category by an Active member.

Applications for Membership
Applications for membership may be obtained at the Club from the staff or from a member / sponsor and must be mailed after completion.  The Rules of Application are as follows:

1.  Applications must be in writing, endorsed by two (2) members in good standing and accompanied by letters of recommendation from both sponsoring members.  Applications, with check or money order payable to ODBC and letters of recommendation included, must be mailed to the Membership Committee Chairman.  Applications submitted to the Committee in any other manner will not be accepted.  The official date of the application is the date of the postmark of the U. S. Postal Service.
