ODBC General Manager

Joe Nelson

Joe Nelson comes to us from Lynchburg, VA. He spent his early years playing soccer, skiing, boating on Smith Mountain Lake, and backpacking the Blue Ridge Mountains. He started in the hospitality business at an early age, catering with a family company through his teen years and working in kitchens, bussing, serving and bartending during college.  Joe attended Shenandoah University and conservatory where he played on the men’s soccer team, studying theatre and video production. During his internship, however, he fell in love with the hospitality industry instead. After working the floor at two small Mediterranean restaurants in North Arlington for 6 years, he was hired by Rocklands as a Bar manager for their Arlington location. With his organizational skills and genuine enjoyment and appreciation for customer interaction, 5 years later he was asked to run Operations for their Catering department. For over 8 years, Joe would organize and execute events ranging from 10 to 7,000 guests, from The Library of Congress to back yard barbecues.

When the pandemic shut down the Catering department, Joe was hired as the General Manager of The Harbour Grille in Occoquan, leading his team to record sales through unprecedented times. He is now thrilled to be a part of Old Dominion Boat Club.

When he’s not at work, Joe can (or can’t) be found backcountry camping. He still enjoys skiing and playing soccer, even if his knees aren’t what they used to be. Moreover, Joe most enjoys spending time with his daughter and wife of 17 years. Joe and his family reside in Springfield, VA.
