M&B Lecture Series

Come join us in the Club's ballroom on Wednesday, April 3 at 6:30pm for a lecture on the history of Mount Vernon

“No estate in United America is more pleasantly situated than this"

The History of George Washington’s Mount Vernon: 1734 to 2019

Learn about the remarkable history of George and Martha’s Mount Vernon home – one of the most iconic buildings and places in America.  From its initial construction to its development as the estate you know today, we will explore how the site was built, expanded, saved, and preserved today.   The presentation will highlight some of the most recent discoveries and restoration efforts at Mount Vernon and the role that the Mount Vernon Ladies Association has played for more than 160 years, as it acquired the estate and restored it to its vibrant status today.

The lecture will be given by Robert Shenk the Senior Vice President for Visitor Engagement at George Washington’s Mount Vernon.  He oversees Mount Vernon’s Marketing, Guest Experience, Guest Services, Historic Trades, and New Media departments. Rob and his teams welcome, serve, and educate more than 1 million guests at the Mount Vernon estate and more than 8 million digital visitors each year.  Mount Vernon remains the most visited historic home site in the United States.

This lecture is sponsored by the M&B Committee with a big assist from Chairman Gard and President Catts.  It is the first of a 2 part series on Mt. Vernon, George Washington, and the Potomac River as an artery of colonial commerce.
